A sump pump is the active component of a crawl space water management system — it removes water automatically as it accumulates, so your crawl space stays dry without constant manual attention.

What a Sump Pump Does in a Crawl Space

Water accumulates in crawl spaces for a variety of reasons — groundwater pressure, surface water intrusion, drainage channel collection, or seasonal saturation of the surrounding soil. Left to sit, it evaporates and raises humidity, rots organic material, and creates conditions that invite pests and damage framing. A sump pump removes it automatically before those problems develop.

The pump sits in a basin — the sump pit — set into the lowest accessible point of the crawl space floor. A float switch monitors the water level. When water rises to the switch point, the pump activates and runs until the pit is clear. The whole process is automatic and requires no intervention.

Components of a Crawl Space Sump System

Sump Basin (Pit)

A liner set into the crawl space floor at the lowest point. Water collects here — either by gravity flow from drainage channels or by direct accumulation. Basin size affects capacity and how often the pump cycles.

Submersible Pump

The pump sits inside the basin, submerged when water is present. When the float switch activates it, the pump forces water up through the discharge line and out of the crawl space.

Float Switch

The mechanism that controls pump operation. As water rises in the basin, the float rises with it. At the set point, it triggers the pump. When the water drops, the float drops and the pump shuts off.

Discharge Line

A pipe, typically PVC, that carries water from the pump to an exit point outside and away from the foundation. Proper discharge routing prevents the removed water from re-entering the crawl space.

Check Valve

Installed in the discharge line to prevent water from flowing back into the basin when the pump shuts off. Without it, water drains back, the float rises, and the pump re-activates needlessly.

When a Sump Pump Makes Sense

A sump pump is appropriate when water is actually accumulating in the crawl space — from active intrusion, from groundwater, or as the collection point for an interior drainage system. If your crawl space issue is purely ground moisture evaporation rather than liquid water accumulation, you may not need a pump at all.

Why does a crawl space need a sump pump?
A sump pump provides active, automatic water removal. Without one, water that enters or accumulates in a crawl space has nowhere to go except to evaporate — which raises humidity — or to sit and cause damage. A sump pump removes water from the space as it collects, keeping the crawl space dry without requiring any manual action.
How does the sump pump know when to turn on?
Sump pumps use a float switch — a mechanism that rises with the water level. When the water reaches the switch's set point, the pump activates and runs until the water level drops back down. Some pumps have adjustable float settings; others have integrated sensors. Either way, operation is automatic.
Where does the water go after the pump removes it?
The pump pushes water through a discharge pipe to an exit point away from the house — typically to a slope, a dry well, a storm drain, or daylight in a lower area of the yard. The discharge location needs to be far enough from the foundation that the water doesn't migrate back under the house.
Do I need a sump pump if I also have interior drainage?
Usually yes. Interior drainage channels collect and route water to a sump pit, but the sump pump is what actually removes it. The drainage and the pump work together — the drainage gets the water to the basin, and the pump gets it out of the house. Without the pump, the basin eventually fills.
What size sump pump do I need?
Pump sizing depends on the volume of water you're managing and how quickly it accumulates. Undersizing a pump can mean it runs continuously and wears out quickly. We select pump capacity based on the actual water conditions we observe during inspection, not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
What happens if the power goes out during a storm?
Primary sump pumps require electricity, which is exactly when storms — the most likely cause of heavy water intrusion — can knock out power.
